Miami Neighborhood Takes Action After Jogger Killed in Hit-and-Run: Stop Signs Installed

Just a few days after a jogger was murdered in a hit-and-run accident in a neighbourhood in Miami, the county took action to try to make that area safer for the people who live there.

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, when Andrew Loretta was jogging in front of Shanendoah Park when he was struck by a vehicle.

According to the police, the driver, Andres Estupinan, who is 36 years old, was travelling at an excessive speed when he collided with Loretta. As a result, his body was thrown into the air and landed 170 feet away from the incident site. After that, the driver wrecked three other vehicles.

This roadway was deemed a dangerous area by a number of neighbourhoods, which prompted the authorities in the area to take swift action.

“They have a little more work to finish up, but basically from all the way to Coral Way, drivers going down 21st Avenue should expect to stop at every one of those intersections,” said Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins. “They have another little bit of work to finish up.”

More four-way stop signs were put on this street by the county public works department.

On a city street like this one, you would normally wait for the city to make a request of this kind, but I thought that this was a pretty apparent option. According to Higgins, “We have a park, a library, and two schools located within our community.”

According to Higgins, the city will now engage in the process of implementing additional steps to ensure that this street is safer.
