There was a large lid that had been stuck around the neck of a black bear for two years, but wildlife experts in Michigan were finally able to capture the bear and remove it.
On Wednesday, the state bear specialist Cody Norton stated that it is “pretty incredible” that the bear was able to survive and feed itself. On the other hand, the bear was in much better condition than we had anticipated it to be in, despite the fact that the neck was scarred and lost hair.
When the bear was a young cub, it was captured on a trail camera for the first time in 2023 in the northern Lower Peninsula district. The Department of Natural Resources was looking for the elusive animal with a hard plastic lid around its neck after that, according to Norton. The lid contained a hard plastic.
Late in the month of May, the bear was captured on camera once more, this time holding the barrel lid. In response, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) set up a cylindrical trap and successfully lured the bear inside. On June 3, the bear was rendered immobile by an injection, and the lid was removed from the enclosure in a matter of minutes. When the bear finally awoke, it wandered off in a rambling manner.
During her time at the scene, Angela Kujawa, a wildlife biologist, expressed her curiosity about the bear’s ability to climb trees while wearing the unsettling accessory.
During the time that he was resting, she stated, “And he probably laid more on his back or side?”
According to Norton, the mystery surrounding how the lid became stuck on the bear’s neck is not completely understood. Bear baiting is permitted in the state of Michigan; however, the hole on the lid of a barrel must typically be sufficiently large to prevent the situation that occurred with this bear.
The bear weighed 110 pounds (49.9 kilograms), which is a weight that is considered to be fairly typical for a child of two years of age.
We were taken aback by the pleasant surprise. “Despite this, it was still able to make a living in a manner that was fairly typical of a bear,” Norton said.
