Michigan Pool Party Turns Deadly: 4 Stabbed, 2 Fatally, Suspect Charged with Murder

DETROIT, Mich. — A Michigan pool party ended in tragedy after a violent altercation left four people stabbed, including two who died from their injuries. Wayne County prosecutors have charged 31-year-old Daiwan Lemane Hopson in connection with the attack, which occurred on August 9 at a backyard gathering hosted by one of the victims.

According to a press release from Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, the incident began as a friendly gathering of family and friends at the home of 31-year-old Jakirea Williams. An argument between Hopson and an unnamed 40-year-old man escalated quickly in the backyard, ultimately turning deadly.

“What started out as a friendly family and friends, end-of-the-summer gathering turned deadly with four people stabbed. Two succumbed to their injuries. A disagreement. A quick escalation. An introduction of a deadly weapon. And then multiple deaths. So senseless. So tragic. And so very violent,” Worthy said in the statement.

Sequence of Events During the Stabbing

Authorities said that the argument escalated when Hopson allegedly produced a knife and stabbed the 40-year-old man several times. The confrontation then moved to the front yard, where Williams reportedly attempted to intervene and break up the fight. Hopson allegedly stabbed Williams, 25-year-old Martisha Payne, and another 31-year-old man during the altercation.

All four victims were rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, two of them died from their injuries, while the other two survived and are receiving medical care. Details about the victims’ identities and their conditions have not been fully disclosed, as authorities continue the investigation.

Suspect Arrest and Charges

Hopson fled the scene immediately after the stabbing. Law enforcement eventually apprehended him on August 15. Local media reports indicate that because Hopson was on parole for a prior assault charge, he was taken into custody by the Michigan Department of Corrections following his arrest.

Hopson faces two counts of first-degree murder for the fatalities and two counts of assault with intent to murder for the surviving victims. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Detroit, though the exact date has not yet been announced.

Community and Law Enforcement Reaction

The incident has shocked the Detroit community, highlighting the dangers of quick escalation in social settings. Prosecutor Worthy emphasized the senselessness of the violence, noting that a disagreement at a casual backyard gathering turned into a deadly confrontation within minutes.

Neighbors and friends expressed deep concern and grief over the loss of life. “It’s shocking that what should have been a fun summer event ended in such tragedy,” said one local resident.

Background on the Suspect

According to Law and Crime, Daiwan Lemane Hopson, 31, has a criminal history that includes previous violent offenses. At the time of the incident, he was on parole for assault with intent to do great bodily harm, raising further concern among law enforcement officials about repeat violent behavior.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the stabbing, including the dynamics at the party and whether alcohol or other factors contributed to the rapid escalation.

Legal Proceedings and Next Steps

Hopson will face multiple felony charges and could face life in prison if convicted of first-degree murder. Prosecutors are expected to present evidence including witness statements, medical reports, and any surveillance footage from the party or surrounding areas.

Legal experts note that first-degree murder charges in Michigan carry the most severe penalties, and cases involving multiple victims often result in enhanced scrutiny and potential consecutive sentences.

Wayne County law enforcement urges anyone with information about the stabbing or related events to contact the Detroit Police Department or the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. Authorities continue to appeal for community cooperation to ensure that all facts surrounding the deadly incident are thoroughly investigated.

This tragic event underscores the dangers of violent escalation during social gatherings. Law enforcement and prosecutors continue to pursue justice for the victims while urging the public to remain vigilant and report any information that may aid in the investigation.
