A 33-year-old mother in Oklahoma has been charged with killing her newborn son after sleeping with him and his twin sister while “very drunk” on more than a dozen White Claws that same year.
Records show that Spencer Brennan was arrested last week and charged with one count of second-degree murder in the death of Rory Kelson, who was 3 months old.
The Oklahoman said that at 7:15 a.m. on November 2, 2024, the Oklahoma City Police Department reacted to a 911 call at a home in the 9700 block of Mayview Court. When the police arrived at the house, one of them noticed that the baby didn’t seem to be breathing but was still warm to the touch as he was being taken to the ambulance.
The boy was taken to OU Children’s Hospital right away, but there they said he was dead.
According to reports, the medical examiner did an autopsy and found that “asphyxia due to an unsafe sleep environment” was the most likely cause of death. “Almost certainly between the back and bottom cushions of the couch,” the report said.
A story from Oklahoma City says that the victim’s father was the first person to call 911. He called 911 and said that he found his son face down at his wife’s feet at 6:56 a.m., while she was sleeping on the couch.
The parents of the boy who was found dead split a 12-pack of White Claw Hard Seltzer the night before the boy was found. Around 1 a.m., the father put their twins to sleep in their bassinets, which are at the foot of the couple’s bed. It was said that the father then went to sleep by himself.
In an interview with police, Spencer is said to have said that she went to a nearby 7-Eleven after the kids went to bed and bought four more “tall boy” White Claw drinks, which are about 20 ounces each instead of 6 ounces each.
She supposedly said that after going to 7-Eleven, she went home, sat down on the couch, and fell asleep. She said she didn’t remember what happened after that because she was “probably really drunk.”
She said, “I mean, I was drunk enough to just need to pass out,” the statement says.
Police found three empty “tall boy” White Claws in the trash, which is a big deal.
A child abuse doctor is said to have said that Spencer’s getting so drunk probably played a part in her son’s death.
“Due to Brennan’s level of intoxication, her awareness levels were altered and had [her son] been left in his bassinet the risk of being in an unsafe sleep environment would have been lowered and the probability of the child still being alive would have been increased,” the affidavit says.
Spencer was caught on July 1, 2025, and taken to the Cleveland County Jail for processing. As of Thursday afternoon, she was still being held there. The judge set her bond at $500,000.
Spencer is currently set to go back to court on August 5 in the morning.
