New York Stimulus Alert: $400 Checks Coming This October — Are You Eligible?

As inflation rises, it makes the U.S. state budget very difficult. To fix this problem, the State of New York will start sending stimulus checks to those who apply in October. Through Form IT-201, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance will be able to make the payments without any problems, as long as they meet the requirements. In the same way, Kathy Hochul made these checks possible with help from the New York State Legislature. Find out more about these boost checks and how to use them by reading on.

New stimulus checks will be sent to people in New York in October.

In October, New York State will start giving out more than 8 million stimulus checks. The goal is to ease the economic pressure that inflation is causing. With these one-time payments, the state hopes to return some of the extra sales tax that people in the state paid last year. To get the benefit, people must have filed their Form IT-201 state income tax return for the 2023 tax year and not been on another return as a dependent. People who only partially lived in New York during that year will also not be able to get the payment.

Stimulus checks will begin arriving in mid-October.

The state Department of Taxation and Finance said that all qualified taxpayers will get their payments immediately, without having to fill out any extra forms.

The data from tax forms that have already been sent in will be used to make sure that people are eligible and to send checks.

Because there are so many people who need to receive mail, it will be sent out over a few weeks starting in the middle of October, and there will be no set order by ZIP code or area.

Stimulus checks range from $150 to $400.

How much of a refund each person gets will depend on their adjusted gross income and whether they are married. People whose income is less than $75,000 and who file as single, head of household, or married filing separately will get $200. People whose income is between $75,000 and $150,000 will get $150.

However, married couples filing jointly and approved surviving spouses with incomes less than $150,000 will get $400. Those with incomes between $150,000 and $300,000 will get $300.

The state government also asked people who moved after filing their 2023 tax return or who haven’t done so yet to change their information through an Online Services Individual Account. This would make sure the check goes to the right address.

Representatives from the Customer Service Center will not be able to see exact details about the status of each check’s delivery.

The state of New York’s first refund for inflation

This program is New York’s first inflation rebate, and it was included in the state budget that was passed for the fiscal year 2025–2022.

Governor Kathy Hochul and the state legislature, which set aside $2 billion for the project, came to a deal after talks. Some people think the plan is necessary to help people deal with the rising cost of living, while others have said that these funds could have been used to make up for previous federal cuts. Some have even asked if the governor is trying to boost her political support right before she runs for reelection.

How do I find out if I can get the check?

You can get a tax refund if, for the 2023 tax year, you:

  • Filled out Form IT-201, which is a New York State Resident Income Tax Return;
  • Stated income that fell within the following ranges; and
  • Were not claimed as a dependent on the tax return of another person

When will my money come in?

Beginning in the middle of October 2025, we will start sending refund checks to taxpayers who are qualified. Over 8 million people in New York will get their money back, and the checks will be handed out over several weeks. Since mailings are not based on zip code or area, you might get your check before or after your neighbors. We can’t give you a specific delivery date, and the people in our call center won’t be able to give you any more information about the state of your check.

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance website has all the other information you need about checks, like exact amounts and due dates.
