Northern California’s Highway 50: Prepare for Long Delays as Road Closures Impact Traffic

In the days leading up to Father’s Day weekend and beyond, the California Department of Transportation anticipates that a significant number of roads along Highway 50 will be closed to motorists in Northern California.

During the current $280 million Pavement Rehabilitation Project in Yolo County, Caltrans issued a warning to motorists about a scheduled 79-hour closure that would be in place from June 13-17. This closure is associated with the project.

When traveling from the Yolo I-80/US 50 split to Jefferson Boulevard and west of Interstate 5, it is anticipated that there could be delays.

Beginning at nine o’clock on Friday, June 13, and continuing until four o’clock on Tuesday, June 17, a portion of United States Highway 50 in West Sacramento is slated to be decommissioned. The government strongly recommended that drivers make plans, anticipate delays, and take the detour routes that were established and clearly marked.

The A’s home game against the Houston Astros, which was slated to take place on June 16 at Sutter Health Park, is also going to be off because of the closures. According to Caltrans, to reach the ballpark, fans who are arriving from eastbound Interstate 80 will continue on eastbound Interstate 80 until they reach southbound Interstate 5, and then they will return to westbound US-50.

“We ask that you please allow for additional travel time on game day,” an official from Caltrans said.

For the sake of the safety of both motorists and the crews working on these improvements, Caltrans has issued a statement stating that they are on “work zone alert” and that they should slow down in construction zones.

It is anticipated that the extended closure of the entire highway and ramps for the purpose of paving repair will reduce the anticipated amount of time required to finish the project and will increase the safety of the workers. The construction timeline may be altered or delayed, as stated by Caltrans, due to factors such as severe weather, the availability of materials, or other unforeseen occurrences.
