Oklahoma City Public Schools is starting the First Choice Online Academy, a program for grades 1 through 12 that will let them learn completely online. It will start this coming school year.
“Students will meet with their mentors in real time, and those mentors will be certified OKCPS teachers.” “And also do learning activities on their own time and at their own pace,” Oklahoma City Public Schools’ Misti Tope said.
The new program builds on the old E-3 program and gives each student a teacher assistant who is their main point of contact. The curriculum will be the same as what is taught in the district’s traditional schools, but there will be extra choices like Advanced Placement classes and the chance to take classes at colleges and universities at the same time.
“We’re excited to offer Advanced Placement courses, this option, along with concurrent enrollment opportunities with colleges and universities,” Tope told us.
The First Choice Online Academy offers the freedom of online learning along with social and educational events that can be done in person. Students who need help with their schoolwork will be able to get it through small group coaching, one-on-one help, and regular check-ins.
“We offer small group tutoring, one-on-one support, and regular check-ins,” he said.
The teachers who are teaching the classes are already OKCPS employees and have special training in how to teach online.
Kids who want to play sports or do things after school can go to their member school site.
“Students who qualify can attend their member school site during the class period for those activities, and participate in after-school practices and competitions as well,” Tope told us.
