PASADENA, CA — A man accused of viciously assaulting a woman and knocking her unconscious during a sold-out Rüfüs Du Sol concert at the Rose Bowl has been arrested, Pasadena Police confirmed Thursday. The attack, which was caught on video and widely circulated online, sparked outrage over security measures at one of California’s most iconic venues.
The Concert Incident
The violent altercation unfolded on August 16 during the Australian EDM group’s show. According to victim Shelby Elston, 23-year-old Julio Cesar Lopez Zavala allegedly became enraged after a drink was spilled on him.
Elston, who traveled from Phoenix, Arizona, said Zavala initially stormed off, only to return half an hour later screaming threats at her and her fiancé. In a Facebook post detailing the ordeal, Elston said she attempted to defuse the confrontation by apologizing, but Zavala suddenly punched her in the face, knocking her out cold.
Witness Accounts and Viral Video
Video captured by bystanders shows Zavala pummeling Elston repeatedly, even after she collapsed unconscious against the bleachers. Witnesses rushed to intervene, at one point pulling down Zavala’s pants in an effort to stop the assault.
Elston’s fiancé attempted to shield her and reportedly endured several punches himself. Bystanders and event staff eventually carried Elston to a medical tent, where she regained consciousness.
The shocking footage quickly spread across social media, leading to a flood of tips to police. Authorities credited the viral video with helping identify Zavala as the prime suspect.
The Arrest of Julio Cesar Lopez Zavala
On August 20, four days after the attack, Pasadena Police arrested Zavala at his home in Hawthorne, California. Officers confirmed the arrest to KTLA, noting that Zavala had fled the Rose Bowl immediately after the assault.
He is now in custody pending formal charges from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Concerns Over Rose Bowl Security
The incident also raised serious concerns about crowd safety and security protocols at the Rose Bowl. Some concertgoers have filed complaints, arguing that the venue was overcrowded and poorly managed during the sold-out event.
“I’ve never seen any venue that has allowed the people to stand there in the walkways. It’s a hazard,” attendee Christine Molina told. She added that multiple private security vendors were present, but coordination appeared lacking.
Molina also reported seeing people openly using drugs in the venue, saying she and her daughter felt unsafe due to the compacted crowd.

Victim’s Recovery
Despite suffering bruises and soreness, Elston has since returned to Arizona and says she is expected to make a full recovery. She expressed gratitude for the public’s help in identifying Zavala and emphasized the importance of stronger venue safety measures to prevent similar incidents.
Formal Charges Pending
Zavala is being held while prosecutors review the case for potential charges, which could include felony assault and other violent crime allegations. Authorities have not released further details on his arraignment date.
