Redstone Township, PA – A harrowing case of child abuse has come to light in Redstone Township, Pennsylvania, where five children were found locked in a sickening, feces-covered dungeon inside their family home. The children, ranging from 5 to 14 years old, were discovered living in deplorable conditions that have shocked the community and prompted law enforcement into swift action.
The parents, James Russell Kahl, 65, and Carly Kahl, 41, were arrested after authorities uncovered the disturbing scene during a search warrant execution. Allegations reveal the father had a live surveillance feed of the dungeon-like room where the children were confined, and reportedly refused to remove the locks from the door.
Discovery of the Feces-Covered Dungeon
The children were found in a bedroom with no beds, boarded-up windows, and walls smeared in feces. The room, described by law enforcement as a dungeon, was infested with fleas and deprived of basic necessities such as adequate clothing and food. According to Trooper Ally Wilson, who was part of the police response team, “It’s sickening, that’s the only word that I can use to describe what we saw and what those children went through.”
Further investigation revealed that the dungeon’s door was secured with three deadbolt locks externally and lacked a door handle, effectively trapping the children inside. Inside the home, officers found cameras linked to the father’s room, along with a stun gun, a replica pistol, and drug paraphernalia.
Investigation and Arrest
Authorities were initially alerted to the situation on August 8 when Fayette County Children and Youth Services received a complaint. Subsequently, the Pennsylvania State Police responded and conducted a thorough search that led to the parents’ arrests on multiple charges.
- James Russell Kahl and Carly Kahl were charged with endangering the welfare of children, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and drug possession.
- The couple has been held without bail pending further investigation.
- Records show that James Kahl previously pleaded guilty to a harassment charge in 2006.
According to a criminal complaint obtained by WPXI, James Kahl admitted to refusing to remove the locks from the dungeon door. Interviews with the children revealed claims of marijuana use by the father and severe neglect. Shockingly, James allegedly forced Carly to use a stun gun on one of the children as a form of punishment.

Community and Official Responses
Fayette County District Attorney Mike Aubele expressed his deep concern after viewing the evidence, stating that the road to recovery for the children will be long and complex. “We are very happy that a family member was willing to come forward and report this to us. Our Children and Youth Services and state police have done an exceptional job following through from the initial removal of these children to the arrests made.”
Aubele emphasized the importance of community vigilance, urging neighbors and acquaintances to report suspicious activity, saying, “Law enforcement cannot be in every household every single minute of every day; we need people to come forward and think of these children.”
Trooper Ally Wilson echoed the sentiment, hoping the parents are held accountable: “I’m hoping these parents go to jail and answer for what they’ve done.”
Current Status and Next Steps
The five children have been placed in the care of youth services where they will receive necessary medical and psychological support. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek to ensure the children’s safety and bring justice in this tragic case.
