Search Efforts Continue for Missing 15-Year-Old Girl in East River Near Roosevelt Island

Reports said a 15-year-old girl went into the East River near the Roosevelt Island Bridge and didn’t come back out. Divers from the FDNY and NYPD looked for her.

Around 12:15 p.m., first responders were called to a report of a person sinking. Divers from the FDNY searched the water but couldn’t find anyone. They then turned the scene over to the NYPD, who used harbor units to continue their search, according to both departments.

Dive teams with ladders and ropes went into the East River to look for the girl who went missing just below the bridge that links Roosevelt Island to Long Island City. It’s likely that NYPD Harbor Unit boats were using side sweeping sonar to look for the teen.

A NYPD chopper and a drone flew over the water and looked at it.

Around the barrier were a pair of white sneakers, a jacket, and some books that looked like they had been taken off before someone climbed over and went into the water.

There was no information about what might have caused the accident or who else the search teams were looking for besides a teenage girl. Later that night, the search stopped.

People say that the stream in the East River is strong, and it’s very hard to see what’s below the water. There are also a lot of boats in this area because the NYC Ferry runs from East 90th Street to the island.
