Senior Couples to Receive $3,089 in Social Security Payments This July

The Social Security Administration’s COLA Fact Sheet tells us that the average monthly amount for an older couple getting benefits is $3,089 after the Cost-of-Living Adjustment. In fact, since their average monthly payment was $3,014 in 2024, they are getting about 2.5% more in 2025.

A senior couple can both get Social Security benefits, as long as both of them paid taxes to the government while they worked. However, one of them could get benefits on the other spouse’s record. These benefits, which are sometimes called “spousal benefits,” can help you out financially when you need extra cash to get by.

When could senior couples who are eligible get $3,089 from Social Security?

To be exact, you might get a payment for your retirement on July 9. That payment was for retirees who had benefits before May 1997 or who were getting both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income at the same time. This is the first pay cheque that can be made after that one on July 3.

To get money from the SSA on July 9, your birth date must be between July 1 and July 10. If you are qualified and did not get the payment on July 3, you will get it on July 9. It doesn’t really matter what month or year you were born as long as the Agency gave their OK.

Do not forget that there is also a payment due on July 16 and July 23, 2025. To make sure you get paid, the Social Security Administration will look at the date you were born.

  • People born between July 11 and July 20 will get their money on July 16.
  • People born between July 21 and July 31 will get their money on July 23.
  • People who got benefits before May 1997 will get paid on August 1.
  • People who get both Social Security and SSI at the same time: Both bills are due on August 1.

Will all senior couples get $3,089 in July?

Not every couple in retirement can get that much money. It will actually depend on the work experience of each recipient. This means that some people who get both benefits will get less money, while others will get more.

Of course, getting $3,089 would be a chance, but some senior couples might be able to get a payment very close to that amount. A single worker can get about $2,002 a year.

The Social Security Administration gives about $950 to the spouses of retired workers. You can see that adding $2,002 and $950 makes a big difference. These rules are in place because only one of the two wives has worked and paid enough taxes to the SSA.

They can get a lot more if they both made the maximum amount of tax for 35 years, filed their taxes when they were 70, and worked for 35 years in jobs that the government paid for. One person will get the most money, $5,108 in 2025.
