A 12-year-old girl was attacked by a shark off the coast of South Carolina just days after a similar incident in Florida, where a 9-year-old girl tragically lost her hand. The horrifying attack took place near a resort on Hilton Head Island on Tuesday, June 17.
According to Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue, the young girl suffered a severe leg injury, consistent with lacerations typically caused by a shark bite. Despite the frightening situation, the girl, whose name has not been made public, received immediate aid from Shore Beach Services and Fire Rescue staff, who were able to treat her onsite.
Though the injury was serious, it was not life-threatening, and the girl was airlifted to a hospital in Savannah, Georgia, roughly 40 miles away. A local news outlet obtained audio of a call made by first responders, where they could be heard informing medical dispatchers that the girl was conscious and breathing. However, she had already lost a significant amount of blood. The responders noted the bite was on her lower right leg, just below the kneecap.
This tragic event follows a similar incident in Florida just days earlier, where a 9-year-old girl lost her hand in a shark attack on June 11.
