Shooter Waited Over an Hour Before Killing College Student, New Affidavit Reveals

Authorities in Georgia say that the killer shot his victim in the head after following him around his apartment for more than an hour.

Nigel Belser, who is 21 years old, is charged with murder, aggravated assault, and having a gun while committing a crime.

Police say he killed Akash Banerjee, 22, a student at Georgia Tech, at an apartment complex on May 18. But the police haven’t said how or why the two knew each other, if they did.

An arrest document that local media sources were able to access says that Belser, a student at Morehouse College, sneaked into Banerjee’s building around 4 p.m. on the day in question, climbed the stairs to the ninth floor, and twisted the victim’s doorknob.

It looks like Belser stayed in the building for more than an hour after that.

Banerjee came back about ten minutes after leaving his house for a quick trip to the gas station nearby. Reports say that Belser was hiding in the stairwell when Banerjee came back.

The statement says, “It seems that something caught [the victim’s] attention, which caused him to reach out to the door of the stairwell, where the suspect was still hiding.” “The victim quickly steps back because he looks startled by what he saw.”

Belser is said to have shot the man in the head when he tried to protect himself. Banerjee was able to knock on the door of a flat before he passed out.

A 911 caller said, “There is someone lying on the floor in front of my door.” “There was a loud noise…” He looks like he was shot in the head, so please come quickly.

Paramedics took Banerjee to the hospital, but he died on May 20 from his injuries. The next day, cops released video of a person of interest. Officials say Belser turned himself in to the Fulton County Jail on Sunday after authorities found him to be a suspect.

Even though he wouldn’t say more, Belser’s lawyer, Keith Adams, who represented Young Thug in the YSL trial, said that his client is the victim.

Adams said, “He has no record at all, strong ties to the community, and a very strong family.”

The person is still being held at the Fulton County Jail without bond.
