Williams was visiting New Orleans with family, enjoying rare downtime away from her children. Her birthday trip took a heartbreaking turn in the early hours of Sunday morning, when a sudden street shooting erupted, changing the course of the celebration forever.
The Tragic Birthday Celebration
Williams traveled with her younger siblings, mother, cousins, and other family members to the vibrant city of New Orleans to celebrate her 33rd birthday. The group planned a simple weekend to enjoy the sights and festivities of the famous French Quarter before returning to Chicago later that day.
What started as a fun night out ended in horror when, around 2 a.m., their group witnessed an altercation ignite on Bourbon Street. Initially, no one expected the fight to escalate into gunfire amid the large crowd.
“On our way, leaving, two guys got into an altercation, and we’re not thinking that they’re going to pull out any weapons or any of that, because it’s a big crowd,” said Williams’ cousin, Kardajia Wells, during an interview with ABC 7.
However, the situation quickly worsened. New Orleans police confirmed that the tussle became a shootout, with at least one individual brandishing a firearm and firing indiscriminately. Williams was struck by a stray bullet and died at the scene. Two others suffered injuries and were hospitalized.
Ongoing Investigation and Police Response
The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) is actively investigating the incident. Three individuals – two women and one man – have been questioned as persons of interest, but no arrests have been made as of now.
Law enforcement officials are seeking a described suspect: a heavyset black male last seen wearing a black and white hoodie at the shooting site. The NOPD continues to call for any witnesses or information to aid the investigation.
Impact on Family and Community
The loss has deeply impacted Williams’ family, many of whom witnessed the shooting firsthand. The tragedy has left her second-grade daughter and preschool-age son without their mother, as their family struggles to come to terms with the devastating event.
“How do you go to another city and just try to have some fun and return with everyone but one person?” Wells emotionally expressed.
Williams had recently shared on social media, “Tomorrow about me,” highlighting her hope for new beginnings shortly before her fatal trip to Louisiana.
Her family now faces the painful challenge of grieving while supporting her young children through this unimaginable loss.
