SNAP Boost 16+ States Rolling Out Additional Payments This Month

Sixteen jurisdictions will begin distributing Summer EBT benefits in June. This program, also known as “SUN Bucks,” provides $120 per eligible child. The goal is to support low-income families with food purchases during the summer school break.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) projected that 21 million children would be served by 2024. The total distribution would reach approximately $2.5 billion. Coverage includes 35 states, five U.S. territories, and four tribal nations.

Who qualifies for summer SNAP benefits in June?

Most recipients already participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). By 2025, 37 states, the District of Columbia, and all U.S. territories will participate. The expansion reflects the gradual adoption of the federal program.

Summer EBT benefits will be delivered through three different methods. The method depends on the specific regulations of each participating state. Funds may be loaded onto the recipient’s existing SNAP EBT card.

Alternatively, the funds will be added to the summer EBT card used the previous year. The third option involves issuing a new summer EBT card. This new card would be mailed to the registered addresses.

The list of states sending SUN Bucks in June includes: Alabama, District of Columbia, California, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The rest of the participating states will deliver the payments from July on.

Through September 30, 2025, the maximum monthly amounts for the SNAP program for fiscal year 2025, applicable in the 48 contiguous U.S. states and the District of Columbia, are as follows:

Therefore, all households already receiving SNAP benefits are automatically eligible to receive Summer EBT payments and do not need to complete any paperwork. However, it’s recommended to contact your local SNAP office if you have any questions or complaints.

Children participating in certain government programs are eligible directly, as are food stamp recipients. This includes those who receive free or reduced-price school meals. Additionally, households receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits are automatically eligible. The Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations is also covered.

What can I spend my SNAP benefits and Summer EBT on?

Financial resources can be used to purchase foods eligible under SNAP guidelines. This includes fruits, vegetables, dairy products, grains, meats, and poultry. Restrictions exclude non-food items and certain specific items.

It is prohibited to use benefits for cleaning or personal hygiene items. The purchase of alcoholic beverages or tobacco is also prohibited. Hot meals prepared at the point of sale are also excluded.
