CHANNELVIEW, Texas — Authorities in Harris County now say a tragic April incident, in which a mother and her infant died after their vehicle plunged into the San Jacinto River, was not an accident but a murder-suicide.
Incident Details
On April 25, 39-year-old Crystal Hall-Njepu was driving a Kia SUV in Channelview, just east of Houston, when the vehicle suddenly left the roadway and crashed into the river. Inside the car were her three young children — ages 7, 5, and 1.
According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, two of the children managed to survive thanks to the quick actions of a Good Samaritan who pulled them from the sinking SUV. They were transported to a nearby hospital and were listed in stable condition.
Hall-Njepu and her youngest child, 1-year-old Annah, were tragically unable to escape. Both drowned before emergency crews could reach them. Authorities later confirmed the infant was still strapped into her car seat when discovered.
Investigation and Ruling
Initially, investigators considered the possibility that the crash was accidental. However, after months of review, Sheriff Gonzalez confirmed on Thursday, Aug. 28, that the tragedy has been officially ruled a murder-suicide.
Detectives revealed that a suicide note was recovered inside the submerged Kia, offering evidence that Hall-Njepu intentionally drove the SUV into the river with her children inside.
“This was a heartbreaking case from the start,” Gonzalez said in a statement. “While two children were saved, the loss of a mother and her baby is devastating for the family and the community.”
Family Reaction
Authorities did not release the names of the victims, but Hall-Njepu’s sister, Shannon Jackson, publicly identified them through a GoFundMe fundraiser. The page was created to cover funeral expenses and provide support for the surviving children.
As of late August, the campaign has raised more than $17,000 in donations. Jackson described her sister as a complicated woman who struggled but emphasized the need to focus on caring for the children left behind.
“This is an unimaginable tragedy,” Jackson wrote. “We are grateful for the community’s love and support during this painful time.”
Community and Mental Health Concerns
The shocking revelation has raised concerns about mental health struggles and the lack of resources for mothers in crisis. Local advocates stress the importance of recognizing warning signs of severe depression and suicidal thoughts, especially in parents with young children.

Law enforcement officials also reiterated the importance of Good Samaritans who step in during emergencies. “Had it not been for the bravery of a bystander, we might have lost all three children that day,” one investigator noted.
