Los Angeles, CA – A Chinese national studying for his medical PhD at the University of Southern California (USC) has been arrested on grave charges involving the drugging and rape of multiple women. Sizhe Weng, 30, was taken into custody in August, facing serious felony counts that have alarmed both local and international authorities.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office revealed on Wednesday that Weng allegedly spiked the food and drinks of at least three women before sexually assaulting them. These alleged crimes took place during his academic tenure at USC from 2021 to 2024.
Allegations and Investigation Details
Authorities confirmed that investigators suspect there could be additional victims linked to Weng’s actions. Disturbingly, the scope of the investigation may extend beyond U.S. borders. German police initially alerted Los Angeles officials in January, suspecting Weng of a string of assaults in Europe.
“If you have had any kind of contact with this individual, if you are linked to him through any other ways or any other means, our Robbery Homicide detectives would like to interview you regarding his actions,” said LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton at a press conference.
Following Weng’s arrest, his Los Angeles residence was searched, and he was arraigned on September 2nd on felony charges of forcible rape by use of controlled substances or anesthesia. The exact nature of the drugs is not fully disclosed, but they reportedly act similarly to roofies, drugs known for incapacitating victims.
Legal Proceedings and Possible Sentencing
Weng has pleaded not guilty and is currently held without bail. If convicted, he faces a potential prison sentence ranging from 25 years to life, in addition to another 56 years related to additional charges.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman stated, “No one should ever have to endure the trauma of being drugged, sexually assaulted and stripped of their ability to consent.”
International and Community Concerns
The case has drawn significant attention because of its cross-border implications. The LA Police Department is cooperating with German authorities to uncover the full extent of Weng’s alleged criminal activities.
- Weng was in the U.S. on a student visa during the alleged offenses.
- Police suspect there may be more victims both in the U.S. and internationally.
- The assaults reportedly occurred between 2021 and 2024 during Weng’s doctoral program.
The full details of the assaults in Germany remain unclear, and no charges have been publicly announced related to crimes outside the U.S.
