On Interstate 87 in Orange County, a van that was carrying more than a dozen people, including twelve children, flipped over after being involved in a rear-end collision, according to orange county police.
The collision took place in the southbound lanes of Interstate 87 located just south of Exit 17 in the Town of New Windsor at approximately 3:40 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, according to an announcement made by the New York State Police on Sunday, June 1.
A van with a Chevrolet Express model year 2014 was travelling south when it collided with the rear of a Subaru Outback model year 2026 that had slowed down for traffic, according to the investigators.
According to the police, the impact caused the van to flip over and come to a stop in the left lane, while the Subaru spun onto the right shoulder and collided with a signpost.
According to the authorities, the van was carrying a total of sixteen individuals altogether, which included the driver as well as fifteen passengers, including twelve youngsters ranging in age from one to twelve years old.
A woman who was trapped inside the van was rescued by members of the Vails Gate Fire Department. She was subsequently taken to Westchester Medical Centre with injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening.
The driver and four of the children were evacuated to Garnet Health Medical Centre, while the remaining passengers were transferred to St. Luke’s Hospital. All of the passengers were transported with injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening.
Moreover, the driver of the Subaru was sent to Garnet Health for medical care after being taken there.
The driver of the van, whose name was not made public, was issued traffic fines by the state police for failing to properly restrain five of the children who were inside the vehicle.
